Armour on a budget part two: Spaulders

I found a great shortcut for making armour at home,.

There are companies that sell  spheres, or half spheres of 1 mm to 2 mm thick steel . I have been buying these for very reasonable prices and have chosen the diameter of the spheres or half spheres to fit what I needed, a bigger one for a spaulder, a smaller one for a couter, etc.

Now for making 2 different kinds of Spaulders.

If you have a half sphere cut it in half, then saw and file the corner as shown in picture 1. then start with a strip of steel and hammer it on one side only as indicated by the red dots on part b. it will then bend in a round shape.  You can then weld or rivet one strip (part b.) on part a. as shown in picture 3.  Or you can connect part a. and 2 pieces of part b. so they overlap by riveting leather straps to the back as indicated by the slightly translucent green strips in picture 4. then rivet the Leather straps with buckles for the arms  to the piece.(those are the bright green parts) . For my spaulders I just drilled 2 holes near the edge at the top to lace the spaulders to my shoulders, you can also rivet straps with  buckles to the top instead.

I hope this idea for an easy to make pair of spaulders is helpful. I only needed half a sphere and a few steel strips, as well as a few rivets, straps and buckles. The tools used were a hacksaw, a hammer, a flat and a round metal file, a cordless drill and a sledge hammer as an anvil.
