Inspiration

We are makers, re-enactors and hobby historians that would like to share our experiences and findings to help you get more out of your hobby. Or  provide information to those that are interested in medieval life, technology and historical gear.

the Hobby

Medieval Gear is a versatile hobby. What makes it so interesting to a lot of people is the sheer magnitude of topics and interests. Who might have a lot of fun making a historically accurate shield?

  1. Someone interested in minerals or biochemistry.
  2. Someone that has an interest in woodworking.
  3. Someone interested in weapons and armour.
  4. Someone wanting good protection while sparring during historical martial arts.
  5. someone wanting to display their family coat of arms.                                    Everyone has a different reason for their interest in the same object.  For some it is grinding minerals and oxides into dust to make pigments for the paint. Or for some turning milk into glue by a chemical process. Others find it fascinating to laminate medieval materials like wood, with fabric and glue. To actually create a protective plate not unlike modern ballistic protection.

Fashion

To create a medieval character, it needs an identity, since they say “clothes make the person” getting dressed is your first priority..

Historical clothing is colourful, fascinating and an expression of identity. Functionality and style are an indicator of status. If you can’t work in it or even put it on by yourself, it does show that you are definitely not working class.

The next indicators are fabrics, colours and decorations.

Even Farmers and Tradespeople wore colours and decorations. In some periods there were even  several laws passed forbidding some fashion accessories for commoners. These included pheasant feathers in your cap, or the length of the tips of your shoes..

Embroidery has always been available to every class of society.  Therefore it was very popular. Patterns, flora as well as fauna can be copied from period art.

Bright and colourful things are always an eyecatcher, and therefore the middle ages were very colourful.. There was a wide range of colours available to every class.

As far as jewellery goes, brass and copper castings like pilgrim badges were fairly common. Beads made out of stained wood are also very pretty and versatile.

There’s so much too choose from, go be creative, go be yourself.
